I think the checking thing comes from the fact they have many more travellers in Aus so are more vigilant. How successful it is would be moot; many STD's are asymptomatic or not visible.
I think paid sex is pretty low risk, casual sex from app hookups or drunk party/festival/clubs is higher.
I'm more worried about catching a cold/flu/covid and having to put up with it for a week or 2!

It does amuse me to hear some friends being all paranoid about 'getting bugs' from touching a toilet door handle or going to a mall.

Remember hearing about the armrests and seats on the Underground in London, some researchers did some swabs a while ago and grew the samples in a lab. They found some new bugs from all the interbreeding and mutations from people not washing hands, coughing, sneezing, etc. Those seats and carriages are a huge melting pot of germs. A dick with some E Coli or Candida? Can at least wipe that off.
